 Big Brother Takes Over 100 Billion a Year in Student Loans in healthcare legislation.
Unfortunately for American tax payers, as of July 1st, 2010, the Dept. of Education will originate all new federal student loans. Subsidized Stafford loan rates for undergraduates will drop to 4.5% this fall. PLUS loans carry a 7.9% rate through the direct loan program. Private loans could require more effort to get and will have varying rates. SunTrust, Sallie Mae, and CitiGroup Inc's Student Loan Corp., and PLC's Citizens Bank have dropped their rates on their private loans.
